Advertising in the 1960s: 'Mad Men' a Headliner in CTV's Summer Schedule
by Gail Chiasson
May 13, 2008
It's not often that one can recommend a TV show sight unseen, but without a doubt, Mad Men, premiering June 8 as part of CTV's summer schedule, is likely to appeal to a large majority of Canada's communications industry, as well as the general public.

Mad Men is a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed drama series about the advertising industry in Manhattan in the 1960s and the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women working in it. Created by Emmy Award winning writer and producer Matthew Weiner (The Sopranos) and starring Golden Globe-winner Jon Hamm, the first season of the 13-episode hour-long series will air Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on CTV.

CTV becomes the first conventional network in the world to broadcast the much-buzzed-about drama following its debut last summer on American cable network AMC. Mad Men will also air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET beginning June 11 on Bravo!

The CTV Creative Agency created on-air promos to run on CTV, as well as across CTV Inc's channels and specialty stations to publicize the series.

Mad Men depicts the sexual exploits and social mores of the innovative, yet merciless profession, while taking an unflinching look at the ad men (think Mad-ison Ave.) who shaped the hopes and dreams of Americans on a daily basis. The drama unfolds around Golden Globe winner Jon Hamm as Don Draper, one of the biggest ad men in the business. As he calls
the shots in the boardroom - and the bedroom - he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly-changing society and the young executives nipping at his heels.

"Mad Men is absolutely stunning to watch," says Susanne Boyce, president, creative, content and channels, CTV Inc.. "But behind the striking sets and gorgeous costumes is one of the best written shows on TV. Matthew Weiner has nailed a time of societal change that still resonates today."

After just one season, Mad Men has garnered many accolades including two Golden Globe wins for 'Best Series, Drama' and 'Best Actor in a TV Drama' (Jon Hamm), a Director's Guild Award for 'Best Drama Series', a Writer's Guild Award for 'Best New Series', a Screen Actor's Guild Award nomination for 'Best Actor' (Jon Hamm) and 'Best Drama Series Ensemble', and a 2007 Peabody Award.

In the debut episode, premiering Sunday, June 8 at 10 p.m. ET, the vices of 1960 New York are in full display - smoking, drinking and sex. America's favourite pastime - smoking - is under scrutiny as a Reader's Digest story reveals that the habit is deadly. Don is under pressure from his client, Lucky Strike, to spin the information in tobacco's favour. Meanwhile, Don's new secretary, Peggy (Elisabeth Moss Virgin, The West Wing), starts her first day at Sterling Cooper and quickly realizes what she needs to do to ensure survival in the man-eat-man environment.

The series features a start-studded, experienced cast of faces familiar from many previous and current prime time shows.

Mad Men is produced by Lionsgate and distributed by Toronto-based Maple Pictures.
