The Monitor Moves to Online-Only Paper after 82 Years
by Gail Chiasson
Feb 03, 2009
The Monitor, a Montreal west-end community paper founded in 1926, is closing its paper edition and moving to an online-only paper.

The Feb.5/09 edition will be the last print edition for the paper that serves Notre-Dame de Grace, Côte-St-Luc, Montreal West and Hampstead, long major residential locales for much of Montreal's English community. The paper, with its weekly circulation of about 35,000, hasn't been profitable for about six years.

The Monitor is owned by Transcontinental, which is reportedly trying to find other places within the company for three laid-off staffers. Four contributors will continue to supply content for the online edition at www.themonitor.com.
