Guy Crevier, president and publisher of La Presse, announced that management of La Presse has entered into an agreement in principle with its four unions affiliated with the FTQ (advertising, preparation, internal printing and boiler room). Details of the agreement will be revealed to employees at general meetings taking place during the day, October 29, when members of the unions concerned will be invited to vote in favour of the terms of the new agreements. In related developments, negotiations are continuing with the four CSN unions (editorial staff, clerical staff, computing and distribution). In September, the 125-year-old French-language daily's publisher threatened to close the historic paper on Dec. 1/09 if the unions did not agree to contribute to cost-cutting measures. Like other newpapers, La Presse has struggled to cope with the downturn in the advertising market brought on by the recession. La Presse serves a readership of 815,900 and features rich and diversified coverage of local, national and international news, maintaining correspondents in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, London and Paris. It is owned by Gesca, a subsidiary of Power Corporation of Canada.
